TV White Space

Getting fast internet is easy with the right resources, primarily money.  Read the first chapter of Flash Boys for a story of how it's done.  For the rest of us, the considerations tend to be cost, latency, and speed.

There are a number of options available when you want to minimize cost, and your most demanding internet task is uploading a big file for work in less than half a workday or streaming 4k video.

One of our Getchell neighbors is interested in investigating TV White Space as a potential option for internet that is better than what we have available now.

This is an old-ish article about how TVWS works.  Here is one that is a bit more recent covering some of the latest developments.  This is a nice long white paper where Microsoft discusses how this is a problem (we can skip that part) and how TVWS might be a solution.  Please link in the comments if you have additional information about TVWS.

TVWS is just one of the options we are going to discuss on this blog.  But it looks like an interesting one.

  1. Hi, this is Alix commenting. Apparently Mr. Google knows me as CandyLand. Sorry -- I'm guessing that's from an old YouTube post.

Thanks Greg A. for putting this blog post up for all of us!

  2. As Greg mentioned, the hot links in this article are of use if you'd like some reading on the subject.

I especially liked this document that he linked to: https://msblob.blob.core.windows.net/ncmedia/2017/07/Rural-Broadband-Strategy-Microsoft-Whitepaper-FINAL-7-10-17.pdf
